The Kurdish Alliance of North America (KANA) is 501(c)3 organization founded in 2021 to empower and promote unity in the Kurdish community in the US and Canada and to provide life-saving humanitarian aid to both Kurdish and Afghan US allies.
There are an estimated 25-30,000 Kurds living in the US. Many Kurds came to the US when they were targeted in their home countries for having aided the US-led coalition’s war on terror. Many US allies also remain in hiding overseas as they wait for US visas and are unable to work and support themselves.
The US Kurdish population is increasing, both from second generation Kurdish Americans and new Kurdish immigrants. According to some unofficial estimates, there are as many as 70,000 Kurds living in the US.
Despite this community of Kurds in North America, there is unfortunately little sense of cohesion and unity. Most second-generation Kurdish Americans (and Canadians) cannot read, write, or speak Kurdish. Kurds often find themselves with little influence in the political, economic, academic, and scientific spheres in the U.S and most Americans are unaware of the issues that Kurdish people face overseas.
Consequently, there is a desperate need for a civil, neutral and national initiative that serves all Kurds throughout the US. KANA is here to help promote an integrated and unified Kurdish-American community, and help provide life-saving humanitarian aid to our allies, with your support!
To promote an integrated, prosperous, coherent and influential Kurdish-American community and to provide life-saving humanitarian aid to US allies.
KANA strives to empower the Kurdish community in the US and Canada, promote education among Kurdish American youth, educate the American public about Kurdish issues, and engage in humanitarian work.
1) Specifically, KANA seeks to empower the Kurdish community by programs such as Kurdish book clubs and cooking classes to promote Kurdish culture and help Americans learn about the rich cultural traditions that Kurdish people brought with them. We also donate Kurdish books to local libraries, help Kurdish-American students find educational opportunities and support Kurdish artists.
2) KANA engages in humanitarian work to support US allies in critical need including Afghan and Kurdish refugees who are forced to live in hiding and/or flee their home countries. We seek to provide assistance to those in need as much as possible.
3) KANA seeks to educate the American public as well as policy makers and scholars on the Kurdish issue, the importance of the US-Kurdish alliance, and the struggle for better human rights and economic development in Kurdish areas. We strive to prepare every Kurd (and friend of Kurds) to spread awareness of the Kurdish cause. We also promote a strong US-Kurdish alliance and help build peaceful and healthy relationships between Kurds and other ethnic, cultural, and religious groups in the US.
1) KANA is an independent NGO that strives to serve and welcomes all Kurds and friends of Kurds from the four parts of the Kurdistan regardless of their political party affiliation, dialect, and religion. KANA also assists other US allies in critical need as part of our humanitarian work.
2) KANA serves the Kurdish cause in general and not one specific group. Therefore, KANA does not endorse or promote any specific political party or group of Kurds.
3) KANA puts gender equality at its core. We seek to empower both women and men to promote the Kurdish cause, and we give opportunity equally to men and women to serve within KANA.
